How should this be scored

Vince asked: 1 out runner on first.

Runner on first takes off, batter hits slow roller past pitcher.

2nd baseman was heading to second and ball dies on dirt. Safe first and Second.

Was scored as fielder's choice.


Rick answered: Vince, thank you for your question.


When the runner from first went to steal, the second baseman's job was to cover the bag.

The ball was hit towards where the second baseman had been, no one else could get to the ball in time to make a play, should have been scored as a base hit.

Even if the SS was covering the bag, and the 2B went to cover also, it would still be a base hit.
