I have three cycle-related questions:
by Alan Kelly
(Rockville, Maryland, USA)
Benjie Molina ~ Most recent to hit for cycle in only 4 plate appearances.
Alan asked: (1) Has any MLB player ever hit for the cycle when having only 4 plate appearances in the game?
(2) Has any MLB player ever achieved the cycle by hits in four consecutive innings?
(3) Has any MLB player ever achieved the cycle when the home run was the the only home run of his career?
Rick answered: Alan, thank you for your question!
I was only able to locate an answer for your first question.
I am assuming no one has achieved number two or three. Records such as these are inherent in the game and would be available if they had been achieved.
There are 23 MLB players who have hit for the cycle in only 4 plate appearances. The listing is most recent to earliest.
1. Benjie Molina ( Pictured above)
2. Aubrey Huff
3. Chone Figgins
4. Vladimir Guerrero
5. Brad Wilkerson
6. Jeff Frye
7. Eric Chavez
8. Todd Helton
9. Neifi Perez
10. John Valentin
11. Ray Lankford
12. Eric Davis
13. Mike Greenwell
14. Mike Easler
15. Mike Cubbage
16. Chris Spier
17. Bob Watson
18. Jim Fregosi
19. Jim King
20. Dixie Walker
21. Gee Walker
22. Ray Schalk
23. Dave Bancroft
This is truly an amazing feat. It is hard enough to get 4 consecutive hits, let alone hit for the cycle when you do it.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
