When did MLB batters start using arm & leg guards?

I have had no luck in locating any information on when elbow and leg guards were first used by MLB hitters.

To my best recollection, it was sometime in the 90's. Most prominent initially were Barry Bonds and Craig Biggio.

Possibly one of our readers will be able to shed some light as to the time frame on this one.
