When to run?
by Leo lambert
(Winnipeg, Canada)
Leo asked: There is a runner on third with two outs.
The batter hits a ground ball to third.
Should the runner run on contact or when the third basemen throws to first?
Rick answered: Leo, thank you for your question.
All runners on base, with two outs, are off at the crack of the bat.
From 3B, you are looking to score, should the batter-runner beat the throw, or the 3B make a bad throw, or the 1B bobbles the ball.
By waiting for the ball to be thrown, it gives the defense an opportunity to make a play at home.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
