Who gets the win
by Marcelo
(Farmingdale NY )
Marcelo asked: Starting pitcher goes 3 innings high school game, he's taken out with a 8-1 lead.
Reliever goes 3 innings leaves with 13-2 lead.
Closer comes in, pitches 7th inning to close the game out.
Who gets the win in this 7 inning high school game.
Rick answered: Marcelo, thank you for your question.
Rule 9, art 6...Winning and losing pitchers determined as follows:
a. If the starting pitcher has pitched the first four innings or more and his team is ahead when he is replaced and the team holds the lead for the remainder of the game, he shall be the winning pitcher.
b. (2)If the starting pitcher is removed before having pitched four or more innings and his team is ahead, the official scorer shall determine the winning pitcher to be the relief pitcher who has been the most effective.
With your scenario, the winning pitcher should be the middle reliever who threw innings 4-6.
Yours in baseball,
Rick
